Choosing between Mifare Desfire EV2 and EV3 – what is the difference?
The features of the MIFARE® DESFire® EV3 IC (integrated circuit that stores and processes information) reflect NXP’s continued commitment to security. As part of the MIFARE® DESFire® family, the latest IC brings enhanced performance with a greater operating distance and improved transaction speed compared to its predecessors. An array of security features gives MIFARE® DESFire® EV3 more ways to protect data and help ensure privacy. The IC hardware and software are certified to Common Criteria EAL 5+, and the IC supports a broad choice of open crypto algorithms based on DES, 2K3DES, 3K3DES, or AES. A new Transaction Timer feature, which can be used to set a maximum time per transaction, helps mitigate man-in-the-middle attacks.

Mifare RFID cards have a very slight 7mm x 5mm indent where the chip is embedded inside the card. It’s only visible if you hold the card up to the light and look carefully, generally it’s positioned within a 20mm x 20mm area in the top left-hand corner. If you are printing onto the cards then please be aware that the print head on some ID card printers may miss this 7mm x 5mm chip area and leave a blank space. If that happens then you’ll need to adjust your card layout to accommodate not printing on top of the chip area. Another option is to purchase pre-printed Mifare Cards from us with your background design already in place, so all you do is print on the personalisation. Or instead use a retransfer ID card printer as it does not print directly onto the card. If you’d like a quote for either or a sample card to test then please contact us.
